Tapovan, the land of lord Shiva is a cold barren land which lies above Gangotri glaciers lies at an altitude of approx.14,500 feet. The Gangotri glaciers are in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand India and also one of the biggest glaciers of the Himalayan regions. Tapovan, in Hindu mythology means forest of penance and as the name suggests it is actually a cold barren dry land suitable for offering penance.
