Tapovan, the land of lord Shiva is a cold barren land which lies above Gangotri glaciers lies at an altitude of approx.14,500 feet. The Gangotri glaciers are in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand India and also one of the biggest glaciers of the Himalayan regions. Tapovan, in Hindu mythology means forest of penance and as the name suggests it is actually a cold barren dry land suitable for offering penance. The beauty of Tapovan is because it is a isolated place and is stretched with rocky lands, peaceful environment, small network of streams surrounded by huge mountain peaks making it one of the most awesome sights in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Tapovan, is also known for its Yoga Ashrams, Adventure outfits and upscale resorts. It is long established in India , any place where someone has engaged in serious spiritual retreat may become known as a Tapovana, although there is no forest. The Tapovan area is a base camp for several mountaineering expedition including Shivling Peak, Bhagirathi Peak etc, other tourist places in Tapovan are Triveni Ghat, Lakshman Jhula, Shree Neelkanth Mahadev temple, Anand Prakash Yoga Ashram, Yoga Vidya Mandiram, Guru Yog Peeth etc.
Jolly Grant airport (Dehradun airport) is the nearest airport to Gangotri ( approx. 270 km ). Cabs are available at the airport for Gangotri. From there tourist will trek to Tapovan for nearly 20 km.
Cabs and daily buses from major cities of Uttarakhand like Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun are avilable to Uttar Kashi City. From Uttarkashi, tourist can hire a cab /local bus upto Gangotri. From Gangotri the nearest road heads for trekking of 20 km.
Dehradun in the nearest rail head. The road distance between Gangotri and Dehradun railway station in 240 Km. Taxis and local buses to Gangotri are easily available from Dehradun.
