Rumtek is a village in Sikkim, and is famous for Rumtek Monastery, one of the largest functioning monasteries in Sikkim. The Monastery is spread over 74 acres, and is one of the most significant and largest monasteries in Sikkim. Rumtek Monastery was founded by Wangchuk Dorje in the 16th century. It is located at a distance of 23 km from Gangtok and is surrounded by lush green mountains. The beautiful monastery has preserved a golden stupa and many sculptures which dates back to the 16th Karmapa. It is recommended to attend the morning prayers at the Rumtek Monaster . The old Rumtek Monastery is around 2km from the newer one, and the path is surrounded by white prayers flags. The exterior of the Monastery is in a light shade in blue and its built in traditional sikkimese Alpine style, lutticed wooden windows.
The nearest airport is Bagdogra which is approx.135 Km from the Rumtek. Rented cabs are available at the airport.
From Bagdogra Airport and New Jalpaiguri railway station or Siliguri one can hire a taxi from Siliguri bus stand. Tourist has the option to travel to Gangtok by Sikkim Nationalised Transport Buses, roughly a 5-6 hours journey. Luxury taxis / Normal taxis are easily from NJP railway station / Bagdogra airport and Siliguri Bus Terminus.
The nearest railway station is Ner Jalpaiguri railway station (NJP) which is approx. 130 km. Rented taxis are available at the railway station.
