Namchi or Namtse is the capital of the district of South Sikkim in the Indian state of Sikkim. The word Namchi is made of two words, Nam which in the local language means Sky and Chi means high. Together they for Namchi, the top of the sky. Namchi is situated at an altitude of around 1675 meter (5500 feet) above the sea level. There are many tourist attractions in and around the place, like - Rock Garden, Tendong Hill, Temi Tea Garden, Helipad, Apart from the tourist destinations, tourists can also witness the picturesque views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. the best time to visit Namchi is from March to June. But the overall temperature here is very pleasant throughout the year.
The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB) situated at a distance of approx. 110 km from the city. The Bagdogra airport is well connected with other Indian cities via direct and connecting flights. Cabs are easily available at the airport for the tourists to reach their destination.
Tourists can prebook car from North Bengal Tourism from New Jalpaiguri or hire a rented cab from the airport for travel to Namchi. Some travelers also commence their journey from Gangtok or Pelling to visit Namchi and its surrounding places. Buses at regular intervals are also available from Gangtok to Namchi.
